Quack, quack!

Sadly there’s a much darker side to the search for a cure as well, and one that completely sickens me at times. ‘Quack’ cures and those who sell them have popped up throughout history when people are confused, afraid and desperate to stop the pain they or their loved ones are going through.

As long as people continue to be uneducated about what autism really is, then parents, families and even autistic people themselves will be easy targets for anyone who offers them a ‘miracle cure’ to magically stop their anguish.

It’s easy to judge people who turn to alternative treatments to deal with autism, but can you really blame them for being convinced of even the most unlikely ideas when they’re in such a hugely vulnerable state? Sometimes, hope may be all people have left to keep them going; I know that was the case for me for many years, but not only do many of these so-called ‘cures’ not work, but in some cases they actually cause a great deal of harm.
